The period between four weeks and eight weeks before conception appears to be the most critical when it comes to folic acid consumption

Taking folic acid before and during pregnancy has been found to greatly reduce the risk of having a child born with autism.  A new study finds babies born to women who took folic acid supplements are about 40 percent less likely to be diagnosed with autism.

Researchers say the period between four weeks before conception and eight weeks into a pregnancy appears to be the most critical when it comes to folic acid consumption.  The study can be found online in the "Journal of the American Medical Association."
